Stuyvesant Stompers: Dr. Jazz, Vol. 12

Stuyvesant Stompers: Dr. Jazz, Vol. 12

by Stuyvesant Stompers

The Stuyvesant Stompers were a continually changing group of Dixieland all-stars who appeared in the early 1950s at the Stuyvesant Casino. This 1997 CD features several versions of the Stompers as heard on the Dr. Jazz radio series of 1951-52. The Stuyvesant by 1951 was a hangout for college students and partiers who enjoyed getting drunk, so the audience could get rather boisterous and loud at times. They are reasonably well-behaved during most of these selections, though a bit loud during the two selections that feature cornetist Jimmy McPartland. Wild Bill Davison stars on four numbers, and trumpeter Max Kaminsky stars on the majority of selections. Other stars who are heard from include trombonists Lou McGarity and Ziggy Elmer (the latter is best-known for his period with Harry James); clarinetists Peanuts Hucko, Pee Wee Russell and Cecil Scott; tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman (in excellent form); and pianists Red Richards, Joe Sullivan, Charlie Queener and Lou Stein (who is well-featured on "I Got Rhythm"). Since the recording quality is just OK in spots (the crowd occasionally gets in the way) and the musicians have their streaky moments, this is not an essential release but there are plenty of good moments that Dixieland fans will enjoy hearing.
