I read a lot, all the award winners, all the classics, all the bestsellers. Out of everyone, Breece is my favorite. His stories are sad, about people passed by. In West Virginia in the 70's there is a different culture still hanging on in the hills. A superior culture in some ways comprised of sincerity, sensitivity, connection to the land. They may seem primitive to an outsider but Breece has captured their heart in his stories. I doubt the stories are made up, but witnessed during his life. After reading them it is easy to understand why he took his life. I am glad he lived to write.

Briefly, Breece Pancake was the best writer of his generation, a genius with an incurable inferiority complex. The smallness of this body of work is tragic, but on the other hand I think we should be thankful for what he did leave us with. This book should be treasured like few others from the 20th century.

A brilliant collection of short stories by Breece D'J Pancake, a relatively unknown young writer from rural West Virginia. Reading the stories is a full, complete and wholly authentic submersion into Appalachia. Breece D'J Pancake embodied West Virginia and was able to write about it in a way that is unquestionably real. He is not well known but once you have read his stories, they are not easily forgotten.

Breece Pancake took his own life aged 26. There's a lot of promise in this collection of his stories but the fact of his suicide doesn't change the fact that the stories are uneven in their quality. Some are very good - Trilobites and The Salvation of Me - and all speak with a very authentic voice that is not often heard in literary fiction, rural and southern America. That's not to say that all these stories are perfectly formed shorts; Pancake is no master of the form. Some of the stories show a level of immaturity in their writing as well, especially the "native" accents given to characters. Of course, these criticisms aside, this collection is still quite accomplished for a 26 year old and I'm certain that had Pancake lived longer he would have become a writer of real stature. But, unfortunately, we can only judge him on this one collection and, personally, I think it's a mixed bag. There are some good stories here but much of it is rough around the edges. Definitely worth a read but don't be seduced by any sort of hagiography because of the author's sad ending.

Breece Pancake wrote about what he knew, and what he knew were the people and places of his native West Virginia. These stories are brutally honest and deeply felt. They are mostly full of longing, pain, fear, and bitter knowledge. They aren¿t going to light up anyone¿s day, but they have the stark beauty of a Wyeth watercolor. The prose is as hard as a diamond, and reflects the inner brilliance that comes of form perfectly fitted to function. For a young writer, Pancake¿s voice is remarkably old. Reading them now, at middle age, I am amazed at how mature these stories are, at how old Pancake must have been inside himself to write with such authority. His ability was exceptional, and evidently came at a high personal price. Read these stories. They aren¿t pretty, but they¿re often beautiful, and there will never be any more of them.
