This is an interesting collection of short stories. As is typical with this type of book, some are more interesting than others. I remember reading one of them in a longer version, so that one was disappointing. Most of these are additions to the authors other books in the series and some could have been longer. Overall, a good read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

*** Reviewing “SNAKES AND LADDERS” *** A kind man picked up a tiny, freezing snake off the ground. Nathair and his brothers and sisters had been kicked out of the nest and he was too small to find a warm place to go. But the man could not do much to help him when Nathair was a snake, so he used magic to give him human form. When Nathair looked down at his child’s body, he thought at first the human had eaten him! Abraham offered to care for Nathair for the next ten years and the boy accepted gratefully and lived with his new brother, Austen, and Abraham’s wife. Autumn, a dryad who at 23 still lived at home with her parents, climbed back into her bedroom window. Her father was waiting and asked where she had been when she was supposed to be at the ball with everyone else. He was angry that she had gone somewhere – luckily he didn’t know she was a thief and adrenaline junkie who loved the excitement of what she did. When he left, she texted her boss that the job was complete but she would be unavailable for a job for the next few days. Nathair went to the mansion to do his gardening job. A woman was nearby, gently touching a willow tree and it seemed her hands glowed. He was curious, and he shifted into his snake so he could get closer to see what she was doing. A man joined her, his father he assumed. She was upset with him because he spelled the gates to keep her in, and he had Rylan stealthily follow her everywhere. He told her she would be married – he would announce it tomorrow. When he left, she saw the little golden snake in the tree. She did not expect it to come down, then form a young man in a purple mist. That usually meant a necromancer, but he was not one; and he was too tiny to be a shifter? He suggested she marry him and they could both then do as they wanted and she would gain her freedom. But she said he had to give a gift to her father, and she knew it would be too costly or hard to attain. Nathair joined everyone in the huge mansion and Autumn’s father announced that the suitor must give 3 gifts in a marriage contest: a cake made from an asp’s milk, a solid gold apple, and then he would tell them what the final gift would be. If they failed, Autumn would have to marry Rylan. Would Nathair be able to compete? Could he find the things to win her in marriage? Would she even accept what he was, especially that he was their gardener? This was a cute story in a box set of 6, done almost like a fairy tale with many paranormal beings as a part of this world. I really enjoyed it, and worried for the innocent Nathair navigating among all these supernatural beings. All of the stories are really good and I definitely recommend this set. It is very well done!
