Stop Handgun Violence

Stop Handgun Violence

If you abhor senseless fatalities and love adult-oriented rock 'n' roll, Stop Handgun Violence is the collection for you. This 20-track compilation is easy on the ears and the proceeds benefit the hard-working Stop Handgun Violence organization, which strives to limit gun access to criminals and children and pushes for greater accountability for gun owners, dealers, and manufacturers. Three-quarters of the songs have been previously released, but for the uninitiated, Stop Handgun Violence provides a sampling of quality artists. "Tom & Mary" is a fine slice of the peppy, piano-driven pop typical of the now-defunct Ben Folds Five. The toe-tapping "Guitar" finds John McCrea and Cake nimbly walking the line between smarm and charm. Sugar Ray's bouncy "Someday" proves their appeal goes a bit deeper than their hunky lead singer. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's "Go Daddy-O" and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' "So Sad to Say" manage to squeeze a little extra life out of swing and ska, respectively. And tireless activist and blues breaker Bonnie Raitt gets her mojo working to a reggae beat on "I'm on Your Side." Of the exclusive tracks, Toad the Wet Sprocket's anthemic jangle-rocker "This Is My Life" is the clear standout. Good music, good cause.
