While Trip Foster's team from Deriminc (Deer River Mining Company) is exploring a planet code named XOPEGZ, the team is attacked by a rival group from Maker Explorations. Trip returns to his camp from an inspection of some peculiar formations to find that all his team members have been murdered except Vera Collard. Vera has a serious cut on her head and a broken left arm. (She's left handed.) Vera surprises Trip with that news that Maker has a truck on the planet, which puzzles Trip because there is no fuel source on XOPEGZ to keep a truck running. They manage to steal a Maker truck and investigate a nearby camp run by a company called Narminex. They find that the team there was also murdered by Maker. However, one person survived, Rod Springer, a geologist. In time they find two other Narminex survivors, Wes, a mineralogist, and Andy, a technician. As the survivors set out to find the reason for the mass murders, Maker discovers that there were survivors, and orders a team of their security guards to track them down and kill them.
