The Sackers. In all Captain James T. Kirk's travels, he has never found a race more universally shunned and abhorred. Their mere appearance causes most Federation members to become violently ill.
Now the Sackers have performed a deed whose brutality matches their horrifying exterior. They have stolen a revolutionary new scientific device -- murdering an entire race in the process -- and used it to create a rip in the fabric of space, a hole through which another universe is rapidly leaking. Unless Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise can find a way to stop the new universe's expansion, it will consume -- and utterly destroy -- our own.

It has been years since I read this (as a teenager). I still love it, and remember how much I laughed over the characters. I miss my copy, which is in a box in storage somewhere. Seomtimes, I remember whole segments of the story, and start laughing again.

I read this book many, many years ago. Luckily, I have a memory that can remember books from decades ago, but I wanted to reread it anyway. Excellent book; really 'alien' aliens and a wonderful back story RE: Uhura. I wish that we could have seen the "Sackers" in some other Star Trek novels, though. 5 stars (though the book felt a bit openended at the end, especially in regards to Sulu being Captain of the alien's ship).
