Like fellow Philadelphian Jill Scott and New York City girl Alicia Keys, Musiq shows a tremendous affinity for the classic soul of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Unlike his peers, however, the artist formerly known as Musiq Soulchild also enjoys playing with words: After titling his first two albums Ajuswanaseing and Juslisen, respectively, he's dubbed his third disc Soulstar. Gimmickry aside, however, the soul star's graceful tenor is in fine voice on his latest release, and its classic R&B-inspired grooves are sure to set the mood for many a downtown Brooklyn house party. At 15 songs, however, the disc is a bit overstuffed -- tracks such as the clichéd "Babymother" and admirable-yet-underwhelming reggae-tinged cover of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" (of course, here it's titled "Missyou") could have been cut. Even so, Musiq shines on the bulk of the album. Highlights include the disco-inspired lead single "Forthenight," the string-laden title track, and the Roy Ayers–esque "Momentinlife," featuring husband-and-wife duo Kindred and eccentric rapper Cee-Lo. Although he still has miles to go before he's as prolific as Mr. Wonder or as singular a voice as his fearless peer Bilal (with whom Musiq duets on "Dontstop"), Musiq shows artistic growth with each effort. And for that, he truly is a rising Soulstar.

This is one of the hottest rnb cd's that I have heard within the last year! I definitely suggest anyone who listens to r&b buy this album!

His albums have been getting progressively better and better. The stand-out track for me is "Womanopoly", a rolling beat infused tale of female independence. He respects his craft and it shows.

This is a Soulful CD.. The Tenor Voice that Musiq Blows is an amazing gift!.. His music just isn't music to beat to.. His Lyrics are real and deep as if he is telling a story. I see that he continues to grow.

Soulstar is one of the few CDs out there that is not stuffed full of filler music, leaving you with only 1 or 2 songs for your money. Every song on this CD is great and well worth the time and money. If more CDs of this quality were being released, the record companies would see an increase in sales, rather than a decline.

This is a very balanced and insightful album, I enjoyed the whole thing. The words that can be hard for a man to his woman are said in this album. If you can't say it to her, say it through "Soulstar".

This album is truly wonderful! It’s refreshing to see artists as talented as Musiq actually follow through with music that is wonderful to listen too. You will not be disappointed with this album. Gone are the days of albums with only 9-10 tracks on it. You get your money's worth, and more importantly, the Musiq touches more than your eardrums...
