Very interesting plot. Excellent series storyline. I hope Caroline Mitchell will write many more in this series. Can't wait to read her next novel. --BooksForMe
Fairy tales don't always end with a happy ever after .... sometimes it ends with abduction, torture, disfigurement, and death. Young women are found, their bodies posed in various costumes ... Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, etc. The women are girls who walk the streets at night and mostly not missed when they disappear. Detective Ruby Preston is lead investigator and determined to hunt down this serial killer. BUt there's a catch .... her lover for many years and father of her daughter is being framed for these killings. It doesn't help that Nathan walks on the other side ... his family is and has been criminal laden. But sometimes the heart knows who it loves and doesn't care much about anything else. Ruby has kept her relationship under wraps, so as to not jeopardize her job. But each time another girl is found, it becomes that much more difficult to defend Nathan. But there is another suspect ... one who is very, very close ... one who has personally known all these girls. Just how well do you know the people who are closest to you? After reading LOVE YOU TO DEATH, the first of this series, and giving it a 5-star rating, I wasn't sure if Book 2 would live up to my expectations. I should not have worried. This is a terrific series with credible characters. Ruby has issues, but she keeps her eyes on the ball in order to bring justice to the victims. She tries valiantly to keep her personal life separate from her professional life ... it's a salad mix of emotions when a cop and a criminal want to be together. Nathan, although coming from a criminal background and not exactly clean as a whistle himself comes across as more caring than not, and its evident how he feels about Ruby. The serial killer is a human monster. With ties to Nathan and his family, he produces his killings as art projects. He wants his 15 minutes of fame and is determined that people notice his brilliance as he leaves bodies all over East London. There are twists and turns, mostly coming as a surprise. The story premise is riveting and engaging ... I found it hard to put this one down for any length of time. As always, I recommend starting with the first book of the series, although this one does well as a stand alone. Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this book. I was given the opportunity for a pre-read of this ARC. Holy cow what a book! We meet up with Detective Ruby Preston again as she attempts to keep the east end of London safe. A body turns up in a park and the crime team think they have their killer but more bodies appear, strangely linked to fairy tale characters .. only these aren't your 'bedtime' story type! Ruby has a history with Nathan a member of a notorious family associated with crime and misdemeanours .. can she keep her relationship with him out of the investigation? She will toe the police line but also bend a few rules if it gets too personal. This is a story full of tension, fast paced yet so atmospheric. A page turner that ensures you keep reading. I like Ruby she is a really dedicated cop who lives for her job but has a rebellious side and that is refreshing to see. I wouldn't like to be a suspect on her watch. The description of the derelict building is eerie and almost too uncomfortable for someone like me to read due to my phobia of rodents!! Not only could I visualise them but the sound, smell and fear almost jumped from the page. Brilliant writing but please no more!! I had nightmares after reading this. Graphic murder scenes and the suspect profile was spine-chilling .. plenty of twists and turns along with some great insight into the team members' private lives which all ties in nicely and keeps the book interesting. Ruby is desperate to catch the killer before tragedy strikes again and it is a real race against time, superb, magnificent and all-in-all frickin' marvellous. I absolutely adored this book but still have goosebumps on my skin. It will be a while before I have sweet dreams again! Caroline gets better with each book ... I can't wait for more.
