It's always a pleasant surprise when a record comes out which both embraces Latin America's traditional musical influences and today's hip-hop-influenced music of her streets. Michael Stuart and the crew over at RMM have released just such a project, neither soft-pedaling the urban influence nor squashing the unique Latino flavor. Growing up in New York at the feet of bandleader and uncle Israel "Timbalero" Stuart, Michael was both exposed to urban styles and steeped in salsa. This diversity of influence is evident in the wide stylistic range displayed on Sin Miedo, his fifth release for the RMM label. On the salsa track "Un Bombón Como Tú," Stuart raises eyebrows with his fiery improvisational abilities. Equally suave is the rock-tinged ballad "Nadie Sabe," exposing his pop sensibilities and Nuyorican roots. Stuart does a great job of keeping interest as he style-hops from reggaeton ("El Remedio") to Latin rock ("Déjala Que Baile") to sultry R&B ("Te Gusta Verme Sufrir"). The mixing helps to put this talented artist's best foot forward. Sin Miedo proves a very satisfying listen for the pop listener who might be seeking a different flavor, and also for the salsa patriot hungry for a contemporary voice.
