The World of Kinsmen

Family is everything. Talent is power. And revenge is sweet.

In a distant, future world Kinsmen--small powerful groups of genetically and technologically advanced families--control vast financial empires. They are their own country, their own rulers, and their only limits are other Kinsmen. The struggle for power is a bloody, full-contact sport: in business, on the battlefield...and sometimes in the bedroom.

Old hatreds die hard. Old love dies harder.

On the planet Rada, Meli Galdes' family is of minor rank, and were relying on her marriage to Celino, the razor-smart, ruthless leader of the powerful Carvanna empire. When he abruptly breaks their engagement, he ruins her family and guarantees that Meli will never marry, as no suitor will oppose the rich and influential Carvannas.

But Meli has a rare, secret, lethal--and valuable--talent. As a melder of energy, she's capable of severing anything in her path. So she 'leaves' her family and trains to become one of the best and most lethal of assassins, all the while covertly guarding her family's interests. Now she's ready to quit; but she has one more assignment.

To kill the man who ruined her life.

Excellent novella. I really enjoy the double perspective swinging from one main character to the other. Every time Ilona puts the pen to paper another set of fascinating, strong, dangerous and for paranormal romance endearingly human characters emerges. Plot is tight and twisty. Highly recommend.

Fabulous book, even if a short one.

I LOVE the world this author(s) created. It takes a lot of talent I think to create such a complete world in so few words. Kudos to the author.

When reading a short story you make some allowances - not as mucb background and less elaborate settings as the reader is inly beung shown a glimosr of the world in which the story is set. The Silent Blade fully describes the settings and the world in brief almost parenthetical paragraphs but fails to fully flesh out character motivations in what turns out to be an unfulfilling conclusion. As a lighthearted pageturning tryst into a new world not to be deeply analyzed this was an enjoyable novella. Ultimately though the world of Silent Blade is an interesting and fully thought out one that calls for a novel not a novella in order to do it and its inhabitants justice.

If they write it, (husband and wife team, you know) I will read it. They are that good. Paranormal Romance is too weak a genre to stick this under. This is Fantasy - with all the reality that word can imply. Intense, powerful characters, fast paced action, and no hokey (a.k.a. mawkishly sentimental) love scenes. Real grit, real love. Read it! You'll be glad you did.

Short but action packed. Worth it! Also check out Silver Shark which comes after this. Both are exciting with a unique approach to plot and action. I really enjoyed them both.

In just 51 pages the author team of Ilona Andrews creates a new world with complex characters, traditions, and vivid descriptions. It's a story of love, betrayel, and revenge in a science fiction backdrop. There's another novelette in the same world/worlds that is also excellent, Silver Shark. The only "complaint" I have for either story is that they are short. I would like to see full length novels in the Kinsman world.

This was good, would have been better if it had been flushed out to a full book so it was less rushed and the characters could be developed a little better.

I'm not sure what to categorize this book. It is more like a romantic novel with some scifi hints. It's definitely not what I was expecting. I would've liked if the authors gave a brief recount of why earth is now the "old earth" and what led up to the change. I was disappointed in the old time view on a women's worth and arranged marriages. The heroine was wishy-washy and a pathetic excuse of a women who let's a guy walk all over her, an undeserving and immature guy at that. For being so far into the future and technologically advanced, the book's society seemed no better than our ancestors of 500 years ago. In truth, this story focused more on the character's relationship than the potentially exciting world the Ilona Andrews team could've built. The sex took up a lot of this novella and it was mediocre at best, and clearly one of the two duo has a breast fetish. I love the Ilona Andrews duo, their Kate Daniels series is exceptional and the Edge series, while more romance oriented than I usually like, is still fantastic! Never would've thought I'd be rating any of their books this low, we are. To my fellow dark urban fantasy readers, regardless of my gripes this novella had some rays of interest and wasn't entirely bad, but it wasn't engaging and spellbinding either. I don't think you'd be missing anything if you skipped this, however, if you do indeed read this novella I offer a forewarning. Expect to be annoyed with the lack of basic background reference and prepare to make use of your quick-trigger-page turner finger.

Overall rating : 4.1 A novella, this tale still managed to sneak up on me. Arranged matches have always seemed to be very controversial. When extremely lethal elements are added into the mix, a reader may find themselves not sure if you are rooting for murder or a HEA conclusion. This author has woven quite an intriguing tale that I am still not sure which conclusion I really wanted. Pick up this book to place your vote! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

In the middle of the night it's hard to write a great review. But, as expected, I couldn't put it down. It's the quality one comes to expect from this team.

Very typical Ilona Andrews story. Enjoyable but very formula, and feeling like it. I like Ilona Andrews ,A lot, but it's all starting to feel like a Nora Roberts book. Same old same old achingly beautiful women and study magnificent men and no real plot.

Not much to say about this novella. Too short to develop a story or the characters properly. Pass on it.
