This book is where the 2nd Amber series begins to pick up steam and starts to carry the reader along on the ride, after the first two books tended to plod a bit.
Well. The infodump at the beginning was better handled, the story was interesting but went off in too many directions, and it ended in...not quite a cliffhanger, the immediate enemy(s) had been dealt with, but at a crisis point and just as a major new point of data appeared. As part of one story, it's fine, but these books really don't stand up by themselves. The Wonderland party is confusing but interesting; the various political considerations (and the various new relatives!) get exasperating after a while. The final battle is...it feels unrealistic (insofar as that word can be applied!) - it's difficult but it feels like a videogame battle difficulty, none of them are seriously worried at any point. Unsatisfying.
