3.25 stars--SHOHN is instalment 5.5 in Lori Foster’s contemporary, adult BUCKHORN BROTHERS romance series focusing on the men and women of Buckhorn County. This is twenty-five year old Ranger Shohn Hudson, and twenty-three year old Animal House Pet Hotel owner Nadine Moest’s story line. Originally released as part of the author’s 2013 Buckhorn Ever After anthology SHOHN follows the friends to lovers relationship between Buckhorn Ranger Shohn Hudson, and animal caretaker Nadine Moest. Shohn never thought about Nadine Moest in a sexual sort of way but lately he begins to reconsider his attraction to a woman he has known most of his life. When Shohn is asked to pick up his cousin’s dog from the Animal House Pet Hotel, our hero finds himself thinking about the possibilities of a sexual relationship with our story line heroine. Hoping against odds that Nadine feels the same way Shohn sets about to seduce the woman that has sparked a yearning he never knew existed. What ensues is the quick building, lust to love relationship between Shohn and Nadine, and the potential fall-out when jealousy and misunderstanding rear its’ ugly head. SHOHN is a quick read; a novella length story line that follows one woman who has secretly desired our story line hero, and one man whose manwh*ring ways are coming to an end. The premise is spirited; the characters are animated; the romance is intimate but the overall premise lacks definitive character development or general world building as it concentrates on a few days in the life of two friends who have finally found what they never thought they were looking for.

The story of Shohn Hudson and Nadine Moest was a fun read. It is a novella that was first published 2013 as part of an anthology. While reading it I knew it was a reprint, yet I thought it dated even further back since the demeanor and attitude of the characters reminded me of the first Harlequin books I read a few decades ago. Nadine is a curvy girl, and I loved that. She was a strong, capable, and caring person. She runs her own successful business and is liked by all. She has had a crush on Shohn since they were kids, yet she has no desire to be one of his conquests, another notch in his bedpost. Shohn is a notorious ladies man. He can charm them all and he knows it and enjoys it. Except for Nadine who does not seem to care about his flirting. Shohn seems to take this as a challenge and sets a plan to seduce Nadine. The banter between them is entertaining, the back and forth goes on through the tale. Novella length does not give you much room for character development and a meaningful conflict, but I doubted Shohn's feelings, I was not sure if Nadine was a challenge to him or was there deeper meaning with his relentless pursuit. I also was surprised that the strong and capable woman that Nadine was introduced as swooned when Shohn paid attention to her, was complete putty in his hands. But maybe some books should just be enjoyed for the amusing repartee and sizzling physical chemistry - Shohn had plenty of both of them. A nice rainy evening read ~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
