The original, formulaic Scooby-Doo cartoons owe their success to a dog with a great name, some likably silly comedy, and the scant critical powers of youthful viewers. For fans of hook-happy pop, though, the fabulously brash Scooby-Doo soundtrack is considerably more inspired. Marshaling the most cartoonish of pop stars -- Shaggy, Outkast, Uncle Kracker, Baha Men, and others, this Radio-Disney-ready affair delivers an endless stream of kinetic, energetic songs, many of which drop a Scooby reference into the lyrics and feature familiar-but-refined-grooves. Shaggy (that's the rapper, not Scooby's pal) reworks his boombastic reggae-hop hybrid on a remix of the series theme song, "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You"; Grammy-winning greats Outkast use "Mambo No 5" beats, a theremin, and their familiar clipped phrasings for "Land of a Million Drums"; puppy love king Lil' Romeo reworks the Commodores' funk masterpiece "Brick House" (and includes a mind-numbing "34-26-34" chant); hit meisters Sugar Ray continue spinning their sticky-as-cotton-candy hooks with "Words to Me"; and Uncle Kracker and Busta Rhymes rework Whodini's "Freaks Come Out at Night." Meanwhile, the tastiest Scooby snack may come from those barkin' Baha Men, whose "Scooby Doo" delivers is a strong junkanoo-flavored party anthem that's sure to rock a theater near you.
