Say It Loud! A Celebration of Black Music in America

Say It Loud! A Celebration of Black Music in America

In words, in pictures, and in song after song after song, Say It Loud! presents the most comprehensive overview of 20th-century African-American music available: a fascinating six-CD box set that documents 100 years of black music with 110 tracks and a handsome 100-page booklet that includes essays by Quincy Jones, author David Ritz, and others. The set, which serves as a companion to VH-1's unstoppably engaging five-part documentary about the evolution of black music, covers all shades of the spectrum, from Cab Calloway ("Minnie the Moocher") to Coolio ("Fantastic Voyage"). Highlights of the six discs, which are sequenced chronologically, are simply too numerous to name. But to give a sense of the breadth and depth at hand, here's a random sampling: Billie Holiday's stunning standard "Strange Fruit," Little Richard's rock-'n'-roll romp "Long Tall Sally," Mahalia Jackson's moving "Take My Hand Precious Lord," and Run-D.M.C.'s uplifting rap "Proud to Be Black." All brilliant, all influential. As much a history lesson as a musical celebration, Say It Loud! is sprinkled with historical "sound bites" taken from speeches and interviews -- from Jackie Robinson's comments before the 1949 World Series to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. It's a welcome nod to the documentary and a reminder that black music has been inextricably intertwined with America's social, economic, and political struggles. A number of impressive box sets devoted to black music have been recently released, including Harry Belafonte's monumental Long Road to Freedom and Rhapsodies in Black: Music and Words from the Harlem Renaissance. While each collection has a different focus, Say It Loud was conceived with a built-in appeal. As the documentary's producers put it in their liner notes: "This is not Black Music's Greatest Hits, this is Black Music's Greatest Triumphs." They're not kidding.
