Sasha Santorelli, a wealthy and very attractive divorcee is celebrating her forty-sixth birthday. To celebrate, her four best friends take her out for a night on the town. Collectively known as ‘The Five Widows’, these women have been friends for years, and after consuming a great many tequila shots at a local strip club, Sasha offers up a brazen challenge to the handsome young male dancer that has been performing for them. Her friends, noticing how taken Sasha is with the young man, make him an offer that he can’t refuse. They pay him handsomely to spend an entire week at Sasha’s beck and call. Why in the hell don’t I have friends like these? Sorry, I digress. The young man, Jack Hammer by name, is as attracted to Sasha as she is to him and he eagerly accepts this indecent proposal. However, there is more to Jack than meets the eye. He is in fact a serious university student, studying hard to earn his CPA, and dancing at Pennyfeathers is simply his means of paying his way through school. Despite the difference in their ages and the questionable circumstances that have brought them together, these two quickly develop real feelings for each other. Once they get started, their sex life is very active and satisfying for them both, but of course they have to deal with the normal ups and downs as two people get to know each other and start building a relationship together. It doesn’t help that there are so many people around them that disapprove of their relationship or that Sasha has trust issues courtesy of her ex-husband. Will they be able to overcome all the obstacles and form a solid relationship or will all of the pressure from family and friends cause them to give-up? You’ll have to read the story yourself to find out. I liked the premise of this story and overall, the writing, at least as far as vocabulary and mechanics were concerned, wasn’t that bad. My problem with this story was that the characterization lacked emotional depth. Told almost entirely through conversation, the characters were really one-dimensional which made it difficult for me to drum up any feeling about them one way or the other. There were also instances of point of view shift in the middle of a sentence and what read like lack of continuity from one scene break to the start of a new scene. All authors have their own writing style and all readers have a type of story that they prefer to read. I myself prefer to be emotionally wrapped up in the characters and so, this story wasn’t really my cup of tea. However, if you’re the type of reader that enjoys a fast-paced, light read with lots of steamy love scenes, than this is absolutely the story for you.
I connected with Sasha in that I’m at the same ago and cannot really say what I would do if I were in her shoes. In Silke Ming’s first story in The Five Widows series, we go into Sasha’s world, learn that she is divorced and very well off due to that. The Widows take her out to celebrate her birthday and there she meets Jack, the Widows pay him to stay with her for a whole week. Sasha is somewhat insecure about their age difference but Jack is very sure about his feelings for her, he also gets her to open up about not just sitting pretty as she takes up painting, a passion of hers that she put off when she got married. The Widows also are unsure of him, is he out to get her money, until they get to really know him. She found what she was missing in her sex life with Jack Hammer (believe me he lived up to his name!), the author wrote some scorching scenes. I really enjoyed their story and cannot wait to read about the next Widows book. *Copy provided by author in return for an honest review.
