For more than 200 years, the Miserere by Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) was the world's most closely guarded musical secret. It was composed for Holy Week services at the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican believed the music was so precious it ruled that anyone who tried to copy the score would be excommunicated. In 1770, when Mozart was just 14, he transcribed it from memory after attending a single performance. The power of Allegri's polyphony was amplified by vocal ornamentation improvised by the choir. We don't know how singers would have improvised in Allegri's day, though apparently it was quite elaborate and ecstatic. For this recording, Vladimir Ivanoff has created a "metamorphosis" based on Allegri's original music. Ivanoff plays most of the improvisations himself on the cornetto, an ancient wooden instrument with an exotic trumpet-like tone. It's a strange yet mesmerizing fusion of sounds, reminiscent of OFFICIUM, the exquisite collaboration between saxophonist Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble. The Osnabrück Youth Choir sings raptly and the resonant ambience of the Osnabrück Cathedral gives the music a golden glow.
