Master storyteller Sharon Shinn created the thrilling and enchanting world of Welce in her acclaimed novel Troubled Waters. Return with her to that elemental universe in this tale of secrecy, romance, and a battle for power...

Josetta is a princess of one of the Five Families. But she is far from the throne, so she is free to spend her days working in the poorest sections of the city.

Rafe Adova, an outcast since he was born, lives the life of a career gambler in those slums. He has no ambition other than cheating at the card tables - until the night he decides to help a girl named Corene, who looks like she's stumbled into the wrong bar.

She, too, is a princess - sister to Josetta, who finds her with Rafe. He fascinates her. Josetta has never encountered anyone like him - someone seemingly devoid of elemental blessings.

He is drawn to her, though he thinks they are unlikely to ever meet again - but their connection grows strong when she nurses him back to health after he is assaulted by foreign mercenaries. And when they learn the reason he's being hunted, they know that the truth about his history could endanger not only their love but also their very lives...

Rafe shuffled the deck fr the third time and handed it to the woman on his right so she could cut the cards. It was clear the other three players distrusted him, and even the card cutting didn’t reassure them he wasn’t cheating. But they were too convinced that the next hand would be the winning one to call him out or stop the play. They merely watched him with a narrowed suspicion and nodded to indicate they were still in the game.

Praise for Sharon Shinn and Royal Airs:

"Shinn is a master of world-building, plotting, and characterization.”—Mary Jo Putney, New York Times bestselling author

“Well, when I pick up one of Ms. Shinn’s [novels] I can’t read just one, because I can’t stand to leave the magical world she creates or the multi-faceted characters.”—Heroes and Heartbreakers
“Readers will be delighted with this return to Shinn’s elemental universe...The line of succession for the kingdom of Welce continues to be extraordinarily complicated, which makes for varied, shifting alliances. When it comes to vividly layered characters and detailed world building, Shinn is a master at her craft.”—RT Book Reviews

I love this premise, this world Sharon has created. This is one of the fictional worlds I would love to step into for a vacation. From the plazas, the blessings, and changedays, to the more modern tech that is slowly being discovered. It is just so interesting and there are so many ways the stories can go! I was worried about Josetta being the lead female voice but I was pleasantly surprised. I feel a similar narrative in this book that I have seen in the Samaria books (with two perspectives switching back and forth). I have a no spoiler review policy, so let me say I thought I had it figured out halfway through and didn't, and I really enjoyed reading this book! Sharon, lets have a sweela or hunti next! It's very hard to find writers who blend realistic characters with alternate worlds. Sharon Quinn is an expert. The worlds she creates are full of life and mystery and imagination. Her characters are identifiable and her romances believable. She doesnt throw characters together in the heat of the moment and build a HEA. There are obsticles and real human emotions involved, though she is nice enough to give her characters a happy ending. In Royal Airs, Josetta takes center stage. Her story is one of struggle to maintain her life that she built away from the palace, and not be pulled in that direction again. Along the way, we meet new characters, who can stir hatred, and characters from the previous book that have a chance to grow and develop. It is full of intrigue, danger, and asks you to question what matters to you. In a sense, it is almost a coming of tale for those who received direction late in life with a touch of romance to bring me back for more of her books. I would glady recommend any of her books, but do not expect a light read. Expect to be swept away and your heart strings pulled. I cannot wait for the next installment of the series.

Exciting, well written plot, great world building continuing from Zoe's book. Joesetta and Rafe are perfect. Now on to Corene's story.
