Description: This book is basically is divided into 22 chapters with clinical cases managed in various ways (types of surgery vs. nonoperative). It is sort of like reading 22 cases that might be presented at grand rounds.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide criteria on how to decide whether to treat rotator cuff tears with surgery or without and, if surgery is decided, what type of surgery would be best indicated. These are worthy objectives, but it is hard to teach/learn using an individual surgeon's preference on one particular case. Also, much of the treatment would be better conveyed with video as opposed to static small photos in a smaller-sized paperback.
Audience: The audience includes orthopedic surgeons, residents, fellows, and others who treat shoulder injuries. The book partially meets the goals, although it would be difficult for surgeons to perform a procedure that they previously were inexperienced with after reading this book. Many of the authors and contributors are experts in the field.
Features: The best aspect of the book is its unique presentation of clinical vignettes. Although some photos are of good value, others are not. For complex procedures where surgeons lack experience, videos would be far superior to a few photos.
Assessment: This book is of fair quality for the intended audience. If there were videos, it would be easier to teach procedures to surgeons. It is unique in its organization as clinical vignettes, so this may be of use to people who like to learn in this way.
