Overview

New York in the 1920s had its own jazz sound. With careful arrangements, meticulous execution, and instrumental virtuosity taking precedence over rhythmic abandon, the New York School -- itself made up primarily of white players whose chief source of income was studio and Broadway pit work -- produced music of a distinctly different flavor from that of the New Orleans-based sounds coming out of Chicago. Synonymous with the New York sound was Red Nichols, a skilled trumpeter whose recordings featured some of the city's most accomplished players. Ranging over Nichols sides from 1925 to 1932, RHYTHM OF THE DAY lets us hear such notable New York players as trombonist Miff Mole, saxophonist Jimmy Dorsey, guitarists Carl Kress and Dick McDonohugh, bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini, and clarinetist Benny Goodman in all their early glory. Such pieces as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Eccentric," "Cornfed," and "There'll Come a Time" cast fascinating light on a corner of jazz just beginning to receive the belated attention it deserves.
