As a Java Programming enthusiast, I've been getting deeper into the art of game development and have collected many works on the topic. I was pleasantly surprised to find how well this book brings the theory of programming out of the dark corners of obscurity and into the light of fresh and clear explanations. It makes the basics of programming very approachable, and builds the game enthusiasts confidence in Java programming from page 1. I've even found coverage of topics in this book that I have yet to learn (check out projects 15 and 40)! If you have a group of friends that want to get into game programming, this is a great study group resource as well. Long story short, if you have the patience and desire and a copy of this book you'll go a long way in the pursuit of creating games that are fun to play and span multiple operating systems (MacOSX, Windows, Linux). Enjoy!
I had been looking for a multi-game programming for a while. Most Java books present tons of theory and then have 1 to 3 projects. What's cool about this book is that is has over 50 projects plus variations. The code and illustrations are super clear. It's great for any code warrior!!!
For 'newbies' or mid-range programmers'like myself' Programming Video Games is great. It uses Java to create several games -- each of which is divided up into discrete sections. Line code is provided -- along with illstrations -- and there are suggestions for many variations so you can make these games your own. My only caution is that you must have the desire and brain power to get the most out of the experience. A terrific value!
