A very sad book. This poor dog is left on the side of the road. Finally at the very end, after you are sadden, some family decides to take him in. Too depressing for little kids.

(easy) Dog has been heartlessly abandoned by it's owners by a telephone pole. Now he is PoleDog, his past existence, unbeknownst to the dog, is no longer valid. PoleDog waits and waits with fierce loyalty that man's best friend can offer, but to no avail. Will anybody want him? When will his people come back? Eventually a family comes and collect PoleDog and one would assume adopts him. The family that comes looks like a family that drove by on a previous page so it'd be nice to think that they spotted the dog and came back for him. I gave this book four stars for it's illustrations and the tugs on the heartstrings. The simplistic and sparse use of text is effective as well - it seems to be told through what a dog in the situation would think. A page at the end of the book lends itself nicely to further discussion as it addresses the real issue of animals that are abandoned and mistreated everyday.
