GUSTAF TENGGREN (1896-1970) was a well-known illustrator in his native Sweden before immigrating to the United States in 1920. He illustrated many Golden Books, beginning with The Poky Little Puppy. One of the original twelve Little Golden Books published in 1942, The Poky Little Puppy went on to become the bestselling picture book of all time. Other iconic Little Golden Books illustrated by Tenggren include The Saggy Baggy Elephant, The Shy LIttle Kitten, and Tawny Scrawny Lion. In the late 1930s, Tenggren worked for the Disney Studio, providing concept artwork (created to inspire and guide animators)  for various characters and scenes in Bambi, The Old Mill, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia.

I grew up listening to this book, I could almost read it because my mom read it to me so much. I love this book still and I suggest it for any child.

I bought this for my 2yr old son because it was one of my favorites as a child. He does not care for it as much as I did but I still give it a five.

I read this to a 2 year from my nook and from my laptop. He just loves it. I don't think he understands it yet but loves the pictures. Just remember that if you have a nook it with not be in color. But it is on my laptop. He likes it either way. The story is about a puppy that is lagging behind the rest of the puppies and how he gets rewarded for it at first but in the end it gets him in trouble. They keep sneaking out of the yard and not getting dessert because of it. Very cute book with a lesson in it.

I gave this book to my granddaughter for Christmas. When her mother saw it, she held it to her chest and started to cry. She has wonderful memories of reading this book to her little brother over and over again.

This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I believe that it was one of the first books I had ever read on my own as well. This is a great book about discipline and the consequences of disobeying the rules. The poky little puppy gets into all sorts of trouble.

Of course for this book the title says a lot. This book is about a puppy that is always getting sidetracked by other things and falls behind. He learns his lesson to not poky around when it¿s time to eat or else it will be gone by the time he gets there.

"The Poky Little Puppy" is about five little puppies that do not listen to their mother. Instead of staying in the fence they dig a hole under it every day to go explore the world. While the other puppies climb to the top of a hill, the poky little puppy observes things as he walks. Every night when they go back to their house for dinner all of the puppies don't get to eat, except the poky little puppy. This is a good book to teach children how to listen to adults.

A classic from my daughter's childhood. How many times did that puppy go "roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble" down that hill?

The Poky Little Puppy is another Little Golden Book and Gustaf Tenggren overlap, so, of course, I had to buy it.  Also, I had a copy of this book when I was a child, so it is always fun to revisit some aspects of childhood. I'm not quite sure what the lesson/moral of this story is.  Maybe it's just that puppies don't read very well.  Maybe it is that it pays to be poky if you want rice pudding or chocolate custard, but it doesn't pay to be poky if you want strawberry shortcake.  Maybe it's just that puppies don't listen to their mother any better than little boys do.  Whatever the lesson/moral, this book is adorable because of Tenggren's artwork.
