Overview
The Pine-Tree Coast is a delightful collection of historical vignettes about many sites along the Maine coast from Kittery in the south to Gran Manan Island at the north. The text is illustrated with hundreds of pen and ink drawings of people, places, old-time utensils, etc. The author was a prominent historian and prolific writer.
Chapters are grouped within three sections: The West Coast, The Mid Coast and the East Coast. The West Coast chapters include: Kittery and the Piscataqua; The Isles of Shoals; A Ramble in Old York; Ogunquit, Bald Head, and That Shore; A Turn around Wells Bay; At Kennebunkport; The Story of Cape Porpoise; Biddeford Pool; On Old Orchard Beach; and, From Scarborough to Portland Head. The Mid Coast chapters include: A Day in Portland; Casco Bay; The Gate of the Kennebec; Boothbay and about There; Monhegan on the Sea; Pemaquid the Fortress; and, Thomaston round Owl's Head. The East Coast chapters include: A Voyage to Norumbega; Penobscot Bay and Its Mountain Coasts; Historic Castine; Mount Desert Island; In and Out of Bar Harbor; Around Frenchman's Bay; From Petit Manan to Machias, Cutler, and Quoddy Head; Eastport and Quoddy Bay; and, A Run across Grand Manan. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.
