Cathy has more than 20 years of progressively responsible generalist, specialist, and management experience in the field of human resources and has worked at small and large organizations, in educational settings, in for-profit, and in not-for-profit sectors. In that spirit, in 2004 Cathy wrote Performance Appraisals, for Silver Lining Publications, a division of Barnes & Noble. In 2006, Cathy also wrote Mission Driven Interviewing: Moving Beyond Behavior Based Questions for PTI Publishing. Purchased this book as an aid in passing the PHR exam. This book, while containing valuable information, contained very little useful information. My overall knowledge of HR, after reading this book, has improved but this book had an adverse affect on my readiness to pass the PHR Exam. This book contains a lot of (filler) information seen in other reference books. The author stresses "over analyzing" which had me second guessing every question. The actual PHR exam is nothing like the sample tests provided in the book and in the accompanying CD. The sample tests concentrated on "Tripping Up" the examinee by adding or omitting key words. The actual exam is straight forward and concentrated on HR knowledge rather than memorization of "Act." Furthermore, the CD contains contradictory answers from the prep book. Specifically, Question ID-138 which questions executive exemptions...the CD has the wrong answer according to page 306 in the book. Finally, the book is poorly written with grammatical errors making it a hard read. I am sure there are other prep guides/books that are better suited in preparing for the PHR exam. I do not recommend this book.
Did not help with the test one bit. I did learn from this book but not the knowledge to help pass the test.
This book is a bunch of unhelpful filler!!! I just took the PHR test and this book totally steered me in the wrong direction. DO NOT BUY IT!
I've been studying like mad crazy for my PHR exam in a few weeks and this book it really not helping me at all. I'm a student who wants to get a leg up in the HR profession and this was the most recent book in its class. Other PHR cram books got pretty bad reviews so I decided on this one. What I disslike most about this book is that it'll tell you 'what you need to know' for the exam in one of those 'know this' bubbles but then it wont give you the answer or information about what you need to know! I feel like if it's important to know something then tell me what it is! But still it's a better than nothing. Oh and the CD is rather tricky. You have to click on the PHR test bracket to do sample questions on the cd...that took me a while to figure out.
