Overview

For thirteen-year old Peter Cooper nothing could ruin the start of summer and the thoughts of fun and adventure that lay ahead. Nothing, that is, until he finds himself on the menu of a centuries old madman hungering for his eternal soul.
Raised by his aunt and uncle in their orphanage in the maritime village of Harmon, Peter grows up happy and dreaming of being a sailor. Yet after a brutal storm, Peter finds himself the target of evil machinations plotted by Bill Kyuper, the Pirate King. Long forgotten, the Pirate King returns every hundred years or so to partake in his "transfermashon," as he calls it, a process that will rejuvenate him by absorbing the life-force of a strong, young lad.
After his family's house mysteriously burns down and blame is thrown at Peter, the young boy stows away on a ship and ends up on the man-made island of Pantagruel, where he's abducted by the Pirate King and taken to his lair on Scorpion Cove. It's there the young boy will have to fight for his life as the pirate and his minions seek to sacrifice him for Bill's transformation.

My son, daughter and I have all read and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr. Deacutis is qiite a wordsmith! The author is as gripping for our times as Dickens was for his time. The main character, Peter Cooper, is as contemporary as David Copperfield was in his his times. This is a story of a young boy's very challenging journey, told in contemporary language with great skill (and interjected with wit and humor) The story is exciting and certainly held our interest. I strongly recommend this book to parents, especially to parents who have cildren who aren't "readers". My daughter is a reader and and son is most defineitely not one, but he sure read this book! I am the mother of an avid middle school reader and am always on the look out for something new. Enter:Peter Cooper - who is off to an extraordinary adventure of a lifetime. As a first time author, Mr. DeAcutis vividly entangles his audience in the surroundings and lives of his characters. With a mix of adventure, science fiction, mystery and horror, this book is sure to please a broad spectrum of readers. Upon finishing the last page, all I wanted was more. Definitely a must read!
