Overview

The mental well-being of children and adults is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel, knows why. And he knows what we can do.
"We have a crisis on our hands, and its victims are our children."

Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an emotion scientist, he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults – a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he’d endured. And that was the beginning of Marc’s awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn’t alone, he wasn’t stuck on a timeline, and he wasn’t “wrong” to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it.

In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress and burnout, improve school climate, and enhance academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc’s development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with readers around the world. It is tested, and it works.

This book combines rigor, science, passion and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don’t have to be. Marc Brackett’s life mission is to reverse this course, and this book can show you how.

Dr. Brackett does an excellent job of presenting a case for the emotions that we deserve to feel. Humans experience emotions or feelings (technically different according to Brackett, but used synonymously for those of us who are laymen in the world of these sorts of things) naturally and stifling them is harmful. I read this book because I wanted to hear how dealing with emotions in children is important. I homeschool my own kiddos and wanted to improve my relationship with them and help them learn to deal with their own emotions effectively as they grow and mature. There is some help with that in the one chapter for parents, but the last portion of the book is geared more for school administration. I rated the book 3 stars because while I liked some of the ideas presented, I felt that there was a disconnect between the ideas presented and HOW to actually implement them. I received a free advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions are all my own.

4 stars Permission To Feel by Marc Brackett is a fascinating look at emotions and how better communications and expression of said emotions have the ability to change your life. This book should be required reading for all business leaders, bosses and school teachers. I really enjoyed this book even though I am not the target audience. I am able to easily see how these concepts would have helped me had a teacher employed them while I was in school. I highly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own.

As someone who works in an elementary school, I was glad to see that a lot of the examples are based in classrooms so I could imagine these dynamics personally. I'm sure some teachers feel like there isn't time to do these feeling moments with students, but if little-to-no-learning is taking place now, it seems like it would be worth investing the time in connecting with students to get them invested in their learning. I'm going to recommend this book to my principal.

It was the subtitle that hooked me: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive I am a PTSD survivor and my son is autistic, so you can imagine that emotions run pretty high in this home. As I was just preparing to write this review, my son rushed in, in tears and incredibly distraught, because a neighborhood kid had thrown a dead cicada at him. Luckily, I’d finished reading this book and was able to work through the moment using the main element of this book: The RULER Method. "In the RULER framework, the first three skills— Recognizing, Understanding, and Labeling— help us to accurately identify and decode what we and others are feeling. Then, the two remaining skills— Expressing and Regulating— tell us how we can manage those emotions to achieve desired outcomes— our ultimate goal.” MARC BRACKETT, PH. D. – PERMISSION TO FEEL It is a wonderful tool for getting through feelings, which the book describes as the internal response to an emotion. The book reads very well. There are plenty of scientific data and real-world examples to emphasize the causes and effects of emotions as well as the method presented. I, of course, particularly enjoyed the section on how emotions affect creativity. It helped identify what was holding me back when I had “writer’s block” and explained that emotions could be used to enhance creativity as well as hinder it. That gave me a big boost. I recommend this book to literally everyone. There is not a single person it can’t help. So buy it for yourself, your family members, your friends…hell, even your child’s teacher.

As a licensed psychotherapist, I am interested in books that might be of help in my practice, so I chose to read and review this advance copy. Seeing the title, I expected a self-help book on accessing feelings. I know that it is beneficial to become aware of and identify feelings, as otherwise feelings unacknowledged feelings can get in the way of other processes. But Dr. Brackett’s message goes much further, and the assistance he offers is much greater. Feelings, we learn, are a central component in all areas of our lives. And having established the importance of unlocking the power of our emotions, the author offers an evidence-based system for integrating social and emotional learning, utilizing a system with the acronym RULER: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion. This is an excellent book, offering important information for people of all ages and a system for using it. I certainly plan to integrate this book’s message into my clinical practice. My thanks to author, publisher, and NetGalley for furnishing an advance copy to read and review.
