Description: This third edition is an important update in a field of great importance to pediatric radiology. The ability to evaluate children without the use of radiation is a key alternative to the increasing use of CT (computerized tomography). The author has highlighted the latest updates in imaging both in text and images.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring the latest in imaging as the equipment now produces higher quality images and new findings can be understood. This is a worthy purpose and has been achieved.
Audience: The book is written for practicing radiologists who are evaluating children with sonography. It is also excellent for radiology residents and fellows. The author has succeeded in addressing the essentials of sonography while adding detailed knowledge of pediatric diseases. The author is widely published in both sonography and CT and is highly qualified.
Features: This extensive book covers the entire brain, spinal cord, chest and abdomen. Cardiac and ophthalmologic topics, which are not usually addressed by radiologists, are not discussed. Pediatric brain imaging is extremely well described with many excellent images of important findings and discussion of key problems particular to the newborn brain which is used extensively in pediatrics. Thorough discussions are included in every part of the body which will be very useful in patient care. The only drawback to this book is that color Doppler imaging is limited to a section of the book rather than distributed throughout the regions of the body chapters.
Assessment: This is a key textbook in pediatric imaging that every practitioner who practices radiology in children should have available. It has superb illustrations with excellent descriptions of disease findings and the differential diagnosis. This third edition is very valuable because of the additions to our knowledge and the availability of even better imaging, which is superbly displayed in this book.
