A comprehensive text on the pediatric applications of sonography in the head and extracranial regions of the body, primarily for use by radiologists and sonographers in training and in clinical practice. This revised and updated edition reflects the rapid advances in scanning technology that have led to improvements in image quality and, as a result, to modifications in the imaging approaches to a variety of diseases. It also reflects the broadened applications of Doppler imaging, both duplex and color-flow, which have lead to its increasingly frequent use in evaluating vascular disorders of the brain, neck, gastrointestinal tract, ovaries, and testes. Description: This is a comprehensive review of all of the applications of sonography to clinical practice in the pediatric population. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: This book is intended as a complete resource for pediatric ultrasound.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing radiologists, residents and fellows in radiology, sonographers, and pediatric clinicians.
Features: The greatest strength of this broad review of pediatric ultrasound is its comprehensiveness. As in previous editions, the first two chapters cover the basic principles of ultrasound physics. The next 13 chapters outline normal anatomy and pathology in each anatomic region. The illustrations are plentiful with uniformly clear annotation and excellent quality. The images are a significant resource for residents, and essentially comprise an atlas of both normal anatomy and pathology. The final chapter explains ultrasound-guided interventional procedures.
Assessment: This is a fundamental resource for all aspects of pediatric sonography. More than in any other population, ultrasound is a vitally important diagnostic tool in children. With the recent focus on radiation safety, the necessity of high-quality ultrasound imaging will only increase. Although the innovations in ultrasound technology (including 3D imaging and contrast agents) have not resulted in dramatic advances in the practical applications of ultrasound in most radiology practices, the improvements in image quality and the expansion of the use of ultrasound in pediatric patients since the last edition justify this update.
