"Pay Day," by ReShonda Rate Billingsley and Richelle Denise explored what happened to four co-workers who won the lottery from a work lottery pool. The main characters Janine, Angelique, Raquelle and Terrance thought money could buy them peace and true happiness; however, they found the opposite to be true. Greed and emotional distress resulting from her husband of 9 years leaving her directed Janine's actions to devise a plan to keep all the lottery winnings and not share it with her husband. Vanity and a negative self image led Angelique to get numerous weight loss surgeries and cheat on and lose her boyfriend who truly loved her even before she lost the weight. Prior to winning the lottery Raquelle made some bad choices and embezzled from her company to pay for her son's medical bills. After winning the lottery and faced with the possibility of a prison sentence, Raquelle opted to buy her freedom with all of her lottery winnings. Terrance's request for an annulment from his new bride after winning the lotto was because he thought he could find excitement in the the single life. However, what Terrance got was 18 years' of paying child support to a gold-digging woman and still had to give half of his winnings to his ex-wife. In conclusion, our Brownstone Book Club gave "Pay Day" 4.5 out of 5 stars because it was a book that we could all relate to, but it was predictable. We would definitely read another book from these authors. Christine Harris Brownstone Book Club
