About the Author

Lyman Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856, and died on May 6, 1919. He was known as L. Frank Baum, and he was an American author, best known for his children's books.

Altogether he wrote fifty-five novels, plus four "lost" novels, and eighty-three short stories, and over two hundred poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings, and he also made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen.

Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, into a devout Methodist family. He had English, Scots-Irish, and German ancestry, and he was the seventh of nine children of Cynthia Ann (née Stanton) and Benjamin Ward Baum. Sadly, only five of whom survived into adulthood.
