A versatile pianist with plenty of experience in rock, R&B, and post-bop jazz groups, Eric Muhler is also a fan of ECM music of the 1970s and '80s, such as that of Art Lande. While Keith Jarrett is a major influence, Muhler had developed his own individual voice by the 1980s. Throughout Other Worlds, he shows that he knows how to take his time. This reissue of his first solo piano album has eight original compositions, three of which are free improvisations. However, the improvising is such a logical outgrowth of the themes and vice versa that there is a unity to the music and it is not even obvious which selections are the freely improvised ones. Muhler's playing is tonal even at its freest, often taken out of tempo, and quite thoughtful while occasionally being introspective. To his credit, Eric Muhler does not sound like anyone else and his solos are very difficult to classify as anything but creative laid-back jazz.
