Overview

In New York Times bestselling author Andrew Gross's propulsive thriller, set amid the drought-stricken oil country of Colorado's beautiful high plains, Ty Hauck makes his long-awaited return rallying beaten-down farmers and ranchers against a giant energy company in a deadly confrontation involving murder, retaliation, and cover-up.

Leading a tour down the rapids outside Aspen, Colorado, whitewater guide Dani Whalen comes upon the dead body of a close friend. Trey Watkins's death is ruled an accident. Finding evidence that seems to back up her suspicions that it wasn't, she takes her case to Wade Dunn, the local police chief and her ex-stepfather, with whom she shares some unresolved history. Wade insists the case is closed, but Rooster, a hot air balloon operator in town, claims he saw something from the air she should know. When he suddenly dies in a fiery crash, Dani threatens to take her suspicions public, goading Wade into tossing her in jail.

When an old friend contacts Ty Hauck and says his daughter is in trouble, he doesn't hesitate to get involved. Together, the two step into a sinister scheme running deep beneath the surface of a quiet, Colorado town that has made a deal with the devil to survive. But in the square off between giant energy companies and beaten-down ranchers and farmers, one resource is even more valuable in this drought-stricken region than oil. They both will kill for it—water.

One Mile Under is a thrilling rapid run of hair-raising twists and unforeseen turns set against one of the most provocative environmental issues of our time.

Andrew Gross takes you into his stories by engaging you fully in his characters. He is a master at relationship and making you care so much you want to jump in and help. Whitewater rafting guide Dani Whalen finds her friend Trey's body on a routine trip down the rapids and she soon suspects foul play. Her godfather, detective Ty Hauck comes to join her and the two team up against some of the most lethal people they could ever encounter. Andrew takes you into the world of a ruthless giant energy company and some local farmers who are losing their way of life the way they know it. The action continues to rev up with each page leaving the reader breathless. The conclusion is energetic and explosive. If you weren't aboard for the other books in the series, you will not have any difficulty starting with this book. I can promise it will be so entertaining you will want to read the others! Andrew does thrilling writing like no other author I have read! There was some strong language near the end of the story. I would highly recommend any book by this author his books are hard to put down!!

This was such an interesting book because of the topic. WATER..WATER..WATER. Mr. Gross takes us on a ride that all of us should be thankful to read. He has such a marvelous way of twisting and weaving the subject matter into the suspense that we all love. I learned so much and feel that anyone would benefit from reading it. I have checked out the other book by Andrew Gross-he does co-author with James Patterson too. Hope on the wagon and enjoy the ride!!!!!!!!!!!

I have loved the other books of Andrew Gross and have loved them. This one however left me cold. I found myself flipping thru page after page of description . I had the feeling he was trying to make the book longer...not enough plot. Very disappointed.

I read that Gross and Patterson's collaboration came about because a publisher sent Patterson a note with Gross' manuscript saying "this guy really knows how to write women". I guess if you're an old-school misogynist who thinks that old Doris Day movies nail how women should be written, then that would be true. But contemporary women? Gross apparently hasn't a clue. In Gross' world men are strong, and strong women need to be put in their place by the men in their lives. And he certainly hasn't enough of a clue to not throw in some thoroughly icky sexual innuendo between old "Uncle Ty" and his young god daughter in this book. Gross does his last name justice with that little gem. Just eww. I think I might not be reading any more Andrew Gross books.

If Ty Hauck wears the white hat and has the skills necessary to fight evil and injustice, even outside of the law, he should have killed the obvious black hat and murder who surely deserved it. Then raced to save Dani. Book was 100 pages too long, as the final chapters were ludicrous in ending the book. Hauck survived (barely) and Dani was again made helpless victim by her own poor judgement, and at the last minute, Wade let her go. Really bad way to end the novel. The hero isn't the hero. Even when he had the upper hand. Probably the last Gross book I will read.

Brillant deductions and daring action sequences! To me the best of all of Ty Hauck's series. Tales you away from the big cities and out into the mountains. Have read 4 other Andrew Gross books and all from James Patterson. Wish he would write more adventure styled themes. Great mystery!
