After a hit debut album and a couple of ACM awards in 2001, Trick Pony are no longer country music's dark horses, coming from nowhere to shake things up. That said, the trio respond to their out-of-the-box success with a second album that builds on and expands upon the strengths of their first long player. That means more hard country and honky-tonk and a smattering of smart, contemporary country that gives mainstream melodicism a traditionalist edge. And in Heidi Newfield, Trick Pony have introduced one of the most formidable vocalists to hit country music in years: She's got Lorrie Morgan's husky-voiced sultriness and Tanya Tucker's blues belter's swagger all in one package. When Newfield advises gals to get on with their lives in a sizzling rocker, "Nobody Ever Died of a Broken Heart," the gritty determination in her voice is more than a match for the guitars' wailing urgency. At the other end of the spectrum, the warmth and tenderness she delivers in a pop-country love ballad, "Love Be Still," supported by the comforting harmonies of guitarist Keith Burns and bassist Ira Dean, showcases her seasoned way with phrasing and nuance. She can get down and dirty with the best of 'em too, as she proves on the rowdy honky-tonk-cum-rockabilly come-on, "Rockabilly Blues," and on an aggressive workout with Willie Nelson on the latter's "Whiskey River," reinvigorated here by a driving shuffle rhythm, Newfield's Little Walter–style harmonica and insouciant vocalizing, and Nelson's personable vocals and pungent guitar solo. Let this pony run -- it looks good for the long haul.

The ponies bust STRAIGHT OUT DA GATE with their sophomore effort! Keeping with their energetic, rough and rowdy sound, Trick Pony saddles you in for a wild ride with ON A MISSION! Heidi brakes all the rules with the lyrically-male-oriented "Not Thikin' Straight," and showcases her wonderfully raw sound. On a more contemporary note, "Love is a Ball," is sure to satisfy radio, and listeners of all genre's. The majority of the project is a step-up lyrically and musically! So cowboy up and hang on for one hec of a ride!

Heidi, Ira, and Keith are back with 12 awesome, toe-tappin' hardcore country songs. By now you should be familiar with the rockin' "On a Mission" and the HOT video that goes with it! There are songs about heartbreak, drinking, falling in love, and drinking some more! The most notable drinking song is their cover of "Whiskey River", where they are joined by Willie Nelson himself! Stellar stuff! "Hillbilly Blues" has a really great beat and "Not Thinking Straight Anymore" is about the things you do to try and forget a fizzled relationship. "Love be Still" is a soaring balad, Heidi's voice will give you chills. Keith takes his turn singin on "Love is a Ball" - which is a very upbeat positive song - and the more subdued "Leavin' Seems to be the Goin' Thing". Ira's acoustic wonder "The Devil and Me" is the most heart-wrenching, touching song I have ever heard - it alone is worth the price of the CD. Heidi sings most of the songs, but they are all well-written and played and sang. Trick Pony does not suffer from a sophomore jinx ...

It would seem that Trick Pony can't decide what type of band they want to be. Do they wish to be a country band, that can cross over and turn the volume on the amps up every now and then, or do they want to be a "posing" country-rock band, that can slow it down occasionally. The title song leaves alot to be desired, as the main track is a generic, radio-friendly bore. Sit down, take off the rock star masks and decide what direction you wish to focus on. It's hard to like a band that can't seem to see how they like themselves.

Trick Pony proves that they are for real with their follow-up CD On a Mission. Their sound just gets better and better. A Boy Like You is a really good rock song and the love ballad Love Be Still is just a beautiful song and Ira shows his sensitive side with The Devil and Me. All in all the CD ROCKS.

This cd is a cross between rock & roll & honky tonkin' country. I gave it 5 stars because it absolutley deserves it. The fiery voice of Heidi, the sultry strummin by Keith, & crazy bass antics from Ira will take this group far. On A Mission will NOT disappoint you!

This album shows why Trick Pony is the best. It shows their varied writing skills, musical skills and performance skills. They are a very dynamic group and they put all their effort into this album. The band members are very down to Earth as well. Thanks for a great album!!!!!

This cd is awesome. No matter how many times I listen to it, it never gets old. Trick Pony has re-energized today's country music. I have seen them play live twice now and can't wait to see them again. My husband is not really a fan of country music, but he likes this cd. I have even caught him singin along.

Great follow-up to their first CD.....CD has all things a country music fan is looking for, plus Willie Nelson thrown in for good measure! Keith, Ira, and Heidi are here to stay, you won't be disappointed in this follow-up CD from one class act group.

Keith, Heidi and Ira have done it. This album "On a Mission" is going to be another hit. Its hard to pick just a few songs of the album since i seem to listen to the album from the beginning to the end. Never once skipping over a song. There is nothing like seeing this trio LIVE!

Another great album from Trick Pony. I only wish Keith would sing more lead. I love to hear Heidi in the back ground when he sings. She complements his voice. My favorite song on this album is The Devil & Me. I hope that cut makes it to Country Radio! My other favorites on this album are Leavin Seems to Be the Goin Thing, Rain and Fast Horse.

Trick Pony delivers a good solid effort on their latest cd. The first song "On a Mission" is a good anthem for all of us that has been down alittle. Some of the other great songs are "love is a ball" and Ira does a great job on "The Devil and Me" and "Fast Horses" will get you singing along. Overall this cd will be great in your collection.

This is the honky-tonk album of the year! It's an out-the-door, party-time, cut-loose, fun-filled night on the town - all rolled up into a well-packaged CD. Within 12 tracks, you can celebrate life, fall in love, fall apart, get philosophical, and rejoin the party! (Sounds like a typical Saturday night at the country club.) Trick Pony's sophmore album is everything we love about Trick Pony - and a whole lot more. You can't help but sing along to all the great tunes. I especially enjoyed the "Whiskey River" collaboration with Willie Nelson. Trick Pony is a class act, and they are the best thing to come around for fun-loving country fans.

Their sophomore album, On A Mission, is right on target. It's a great mix of upbeat songs and ballads. I really like the song, Love Is A Ball. You just can't get the song out of your mind! Of course they have Whiskey River with the one and only Willie. I think it is great that Trick Pony remembers the legends of the music. Johnny Cash and Waylon on the first CD and Willie on the second. What more could you ask for!

Trick Pony is on a Mission, a Mission to let everyone know they have the material to back up their self titled Album. They are the greatest entertainers. This Album is as good or better than the first one.

Trick Pony picked up where they left off. Heidi`s vocals are better than ever, the writing is excellent and so are the instrumentals. The more you listen the more you will like it.

This unlikley trio make wonderful music together. Keith's licks on the guitar, Heidi's harmonica, and Ira's antics, together with their harmonies, make a great sound pleasing to the ear. Ira's honesty with The Devil and Me, Heidi's ballad with Love Be Still and Keith's fun two steppin Love is a Ball are all great songs, not to mention On A Mission. This is a MUST have CD. Live is Best, but the CD is the next best thing.

Trick Pony's second Cd is the greatest! Each song has it's own unique sound. Heidi, Ira and Keith have an awesome ability to blend the sounds of older country music with the likes of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to make a new sound that is great! If you haven't gotten the "On A Mission" CD yet, what are you waiting for? I highly recommend it! The song Nobody Dies From A Broken Heart is one of my favorite songs of all time!

The whole CD is great. Heide, Ira and Keith are great together and they make great music. Ira's song "The Devil in Me" was something else.

Trick Pony's sophmore effort hits a homerun!! With the twang and upbeat energy in every song and the nerve striking emotion in ballads like "Love be still" (one of my favorites) this cd delivers. It has a song for every mood, you don't have to be in a good mood to listen to it, though it will probably put you in one. If your in the mood for an upbeat get-moving kind of song the tite track "On A Mission" should do it or you could flip to track #4 "Love is a Ball" and Crank it up too. If your in the mood for a broken heart song you could put on "I'm not thinkin straight anymore." My favorite on the whole cd is Ira's moving ballad "The Devil and Me", a song about Ira's beating alcoholism. With Energy and emotion all the way through, it is a cd that will be in your cd player for a long time!

What a great follow up to their first album! This is a must have for ANY music fan that likes to rock! Heidi, Keith and Ira can do it all from soulful ballads to kickin' party tunes and anything in between. My favorites are "Love Be Still" and the title track "On A Mission". We were lucky enough to see them live in concert and they were AWESOME! Don't miss this album!

This album is even better than the first. This is a group that makes you smile just hearing them. The song from the title track is really one that gets you moving, no one can sit still when Trick Pony is in the house. This is a group that is on the move...straight to the TOP!

The groove alone on the opening track, the title track in fact, gives you a sense it's going to be an interesting ride. Trick Pony did not disappoint. They've talked about being diverse in their music, and it shows here. That's a good thing. My favorites include "On A Mission," "Love Be Still," and "Leavin' Seems To Be The Goin' Thing." Great CD all around.
