Overview

Phil Collins pulls no punches—about himself, his life, or the ecstasy and heartbreak that’s inspired his music.

In his much-awaited memoir, Not Dead Yet, he tells the story of his epic career, with an auspicious debut at age 11 in a crowd shot from the Beatles’ legendary film A Hard Day’s Night. A drummer since almost before he could walk, Collins received on the job training in the seedy, thrilling bars and clubs of 1960s swinging London before finally landing the drum seat in Genesis.

Soon, he would step into the spotlight on vocals after the departure of Peter Gabriel and begin to stockpile the songs that would rocket him to international fame with the release of Face Value and “In the Air Tonight.” Whether he’s recalling jamming with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, pulling together a big band fronted by Tony Bennett, or writing the music for Disney’s smash-hit animated Tarzan, Collins’s storytelling chops never waver. And of course he answers the pressing question on everyone’s mind: just what does “Sussudio” mean?

Not Dead Yet is Phil Collins’s candid, witty, unvarnished story of the songs and shows, the hits and pans, his marriages and divorces, the ascents to the top of the charts and into the tabloid headlines. As one of only three musicians to sell 100 million records both in a group and as a solo artist, Collins breathes rare air, but has never lost his touch at crafting songs from the heart that touch listeners around the globe. That same touch is on magnificent display here, especially as he unfolds his harrowing descent into darkness after his “official” retirement in 2007, and the profound, enduring love that helped save him.

This is Phil Collins as you’ve always known him, but also as you’ve never heard him before.

Finally, an autobiography that gets it right. Its endearing funny and gives you insight into the man behind the music that we all know an love. Thank you. Most memoirs are a poor attempt to cash in on years of a downward cycle, this is the first that I am reading that helps uplift you. There are things that I am already thinking, "Who knew?" about. While I won't spoil the surprise, trust me, its worth reading.

Learned a lot about Phil, both good and bad. Appreciate his candor and willing to open up and share what are surely those difficult times in his life. He shows us that even superstars are human. Love you Phil.

My Review Title: A fascinating autobioraphy! ★¸¸.•*¨*•★Minor Spoilers Alert★•*¨*•.¸¸★ Writing style: First person narrative Cover reaction: I like it. Phil's expression is so indicative of his personality. •*¨*• What did I like about this autobiography? Unpredictable / Easy-to-read / Inspirational / Frank / Witty / Original / Page-turner / HEAFN – happily ever after for now Would I recommend this book? Yes, absolutely! If you grew up watching MTV videos (back when they still played videos), you should know who Phil Collins and Genesis are. Even as a casual fan, you won’t want to miss out on learning more about Phil’s life. I definitely felt he shared honestly. In addition to a very eventful and successful music career, he really struggled with some scary and serious health issues. And then his ex-wife Orianne's health took sudden nose dive. I wonder how she is doing now? Thankfully, Phil's kids seem to have weathered the demands of his career and his health issues fairly well. I wanted to hug Phil in joy at the end of his recounting of his life thus far. This autobiography ranks as a favorite now. I’m hoping I can re-read it again next week.

I have followed Genesis since before Peter Gabriel left and Phil Collins came out from behind the drums. I too play drums; or use to, and always wished to play with Phil. Reading this book was such an insight into the man the general public doesn’t know. Through Phil Collin’s eyes you get a perspective of how difficult it is to balance a musical life and a personal life with the musical one usually winning. It certainly fills in gaps of time, unexplained absences and the personal turmoil’s. A MUST read to understand the man behind the man!!!

I love Phil Collins and Genesis and was really looking forward to this book. When Phil Collins states that this was his memoirs, unfortunately that is exactly where it should have stayed. It is tedious, poorly written, and Genesis must be the MOST boring English rock band in history! If you want to read about how cool Phil Collins thinks he is or how terribly boring Genesis was ( No wonder Peter Gabriel left) then by all means buy this book. Very sad! Big disappointment!
