Abnett & Lanning revisit one of my least favorite New Mutant tales and the results are sadly the same. Cipher's newfound use of his powers are really imaginative but his connections to Warlock have been done to death and aren't at all fun to read. In fact, reading Warlock's speech pattern is tedious at best. The complete lack of an actual antagonist is obviously missed. Added to that is the last chapter that stars a version of Blink that isn't remotely close to the Blink people actual have read and enjoyed in the past. The art by David Lopez and Leandro Fernandez was decent but unspectacular. Overall, a filler storyline that is unnecessary.

I was hoping for more out this volume. The New Mutants return to island where Doug was killed? Cypher has to deal with the trauma of reliving his death? The Ani-mator is back? It sounds so good. But I forgot Chris Claremont was not writing this story or even (shudder) Louis Simonson. Don't get me wrong, this was good, but nearly as good as I had hoped. If you like the New Mutants, by all means pick you up. However, you will enjoy it more if you've read the Fall of the Mutants story from late 80's.
