About the Author

Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English author and poetess. Little is known of Radcliffe's life since she shunned publicity and public contact. Born Ann Ward in London, she married William Radcliffe in 1787 and began writing for entertainment. Her work influenced a number of later writers including Edgar Alan Poe, Jane Austen, Sir Walter Scott, and the Marquis de Sade.
