On My Life, Mary J. Blige trades in the jeep bumping beats and shallow vocals of 1992's What's the 411? for sophisticated jazz chords, rich harmonies, funk grooves and soul jams such as on the title track, which reinterprets the Roy Ayers favorite, "Sunshine." Produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs and Andre Harrell, My Life adds New Jill swing to classic '70s R&B. Take "Be Happy," for instance, which samples the Mary Jane Girls' hit "All Night Long." Throughout My Life Blige's moody vocals often evoke the kindred spirits of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Mavis Staples, especially on ballads such as "Gotta Believe" and "I'm Goin' Down." Still, Blige never loses her ghetto street vibe while paying homage to her musical influences.

Firstly, I have never heard the debut album for this lady. To get to the point, this album is a poor representation of Mary's vocal talent -even though it is said to be the better of her first two releases. Frankly, I love this album, because it touches all aspects of a person's psyche from the pensive

During the summer of 1995, Urban radio belonged to Mary J. Blige. Although there were only four single releases from this album, more than 8 tracks were consistently played all over the country. A perfect blend of hip hop and 70s soul, every track on this album works. Many critics and fans proclaim this to be her best album. One listen and you'll agree. TIDBITS: 'MY LIFE' was the # 1 R&B album of the Year on the BILLBOARD charts and was nominated for a Grammy Award and won several Soul Train Music Awards. Retail Singles included: BE HAPPY, I'M GOIN' DOWN, YOU BRING ME JOY / I LOVE YOU and in the U.K. - MARY JANE (ALL NIGHT LONG). The title track (MY LIFE) was one of the top ten urban radio songs of the year, although it was never released commercially as a single.

Though every CD Ms. Blige releases is going to be a stellar performance in my eyes. 'My Life' is the best, I feel. I've bought this CD three or four times already because something always happens to it and I still don't have a copy of it. I'm purchasing a new one now though.

This is the best CD in the world if any woman were going through any problems and felt like giving up all you had to do was pop this CD in and just let it play from beginning to end. I am most definitely a Mary J. Blige fan so all her CDs are good to me, but this one took the cake she gave me hope and inspiration with the My Life CD. If this CD is not in your collection stop what you are doing and go buy it ASAP!!!!! Also I can't wait until her new CD come out in December because I will be first in line to buy.
