About the Author

Mary E.Kramer served in the Iowa Senate and was elected the President of the Senate in 1997. In 2003 President George W. Bush nominated her to serve as US Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
She began her career as a pianist, and worked as a teacher and school administrator. Later she moved into the corporate world and held executive positions with Younkers, Inc. and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Ambassador Kramer is considered an expert on civil discourse, leadership and business relationships. She has served on many boards and commissions including the State Legislative Leaders Foundation, the Senate President's Forum, the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Central Iowa, Brenton Bank and Mercy Hospital. A lifetime member of the Society for Human Resource Management she received the society's highest international award.
She currently serves as Board Chair of Des Moines Performing Arts and Iowa Public Radio.
She was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 2009 and in 2015 was named a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Iowa.
Ambassador is married to Kay Kramer and is the mother of two; Kent Kramer and Krista Kramer Hartman. She enjoys her four granddaughters: Kelsey, Kallen, Karsen and Kennedy.
