Reviewed by Barbara Fanson for Readers' Favorite Poor Julie. Even though she practices a lot for her upcoming karate test, she just can’t perform in front of other people or animals. She just couldn’t do the flying side kick when others were watching. Her favorite Aunt Mary told Julie about Mister D, which stands for doubt. Mister D is there whenever you say things like “I’m never going to get it right” or “I can’t do it.” Aunt Mary explained how Mister D makes you doubt yourself. During her karate test for a black belt, Julie saw Mister D, but she gave him a flying side kick and passed the test! She got her black belt! The next day, her friend Daniel fell off his new bike, and Mister D showed up. Daniel thought he would never learn how to ride. But Julie ran out of the house and told Mister D to leave Daniel alone, and then she told Daniel the very special secret. Mister D: A Children's Picture Book About Overcoming Doubts and Fears is a wonderful story of conquering self-doubt and trying to do your best. Author Elizabeth Stevens has written a great story that children and parents can relate to. Whether young readers read to themselves or their parents read it to them, it serves as a fun story with an important lesson on dealing with self-doubt and how to kick Mister D to the curb. Beautifully illustrated by Daniela Frongia, the artwork visually adds to the story and accurately showcases Mister D. The tones and bright, bold colors add so much to the book. I like how illustrator Daniela Frongia outlines the main characters with black pen, but the background is less prominent. I loved the expression on the dog’s face!
