Overview

The final volume in the three-disc collection highlighting songs that were drummer Max Weinberg's inspiration moves into the 1970s. There are fewer R&B/soul tunes (six out of 18) as pop music was resegmenting itself, and rock had changed completely; witness the evolution of such spotlighted bands as The Rolling Stones, Raspberries, Edgar Winter Group, Yes, and the Grateful Dead. At the same time, the anthology doesn't ignore the disco movement, including songs by George McRae, Rufus, and MFSB, as well as Aretha Franklin's great uptempo hit "Rock Steady" and Herbie Mann's lone dance smash "Hijack." There are also nods to funk with a Sly & The Family Stone tune, folk-rock with James Taylor, blue-eyed soul '70s-style in Hall And Oates, an early Bruce Springsteen number and Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver."
