In Mastering 3D Animation, Peter Ratner offers riveting illustrations and step-by-step instructions to show animators at all levels how to create professional, studio quality 3D models and animations. Instructions and exercises are provided in a non-software and non-platform specific format to encourage readers to experiment with their own technology.

The book includes hundreds of illustrations along with models and sample animations on a CD-ROM. It stands as a crash course in the up-and-coming field of animation that takes readers chapter-by-chapter from the introductory level to the advanced level. 3D Animation is a book no aspiring animator or animation instructor will want to miss.

"Today, 3D animation is one of the least understood disciplines," writes Ratner, explaining that the "purpose of this book is to provide readers with a set of learning tools to help them create a respectable animation." Ratner, a professional animator and professor of animation, gives in-depth coverage to:

* NURBS and polygon modeling and animation
* Animating with deformation tools
* Special effects
* Modeling human features and figures
* Lighting and surfacing
* Expressing emotion with facial animation
* Animating action
* Composition and cinematography

What People are Saying About This

Chris Tome

Peter Ratner's book is a well thought out, creatively conceived resource for any artist wanting to explore the field of 3D design and animation. Whether you're just starting out or already working in 3D, you'll find this book to be very useful indeed. (Chris Tome, technical editor, 3D Magazine)

James Houska

An absolutely wonderful book, documenting the fine art of digital character animation. A must-have for learning this skill and an excellent reference for more advanced users. (James Houska, lead 3D character animator, Eidos Interactive/Crystal Dynamics)

Franklin Londin

Mastering 3D Animation is a wonderful training manual for beginners and advanced animators alike. It is chock-full of clever methods and techniques for modeling with polygons and NURBS, as well as creating atmospheric FX, effective lighting, efficient character modeling, and striking animation. Most lessons are software independent and are conceptually generic enough to be helpful to any practitioner using any software. My compliments to Peter Ratner for conveying many complicated techniques in an understandable way.(Franklin Londin, CG supervisor, Digital Domain)

Now that I comprehend some of the basics of my animation program, I believe it's an easy book to understand. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. Lately, I have been reading the book before my animation class and I am able to imagine what is being done before I start to work on the computer.
