Filmmaker Charles Burnett uses a blues soundtrack for Warming By the Devil’s Fire, the story of a boy's life in 1955 Mississippi. The set reaches back to pianist Jelly Roll Morton for the gentle instrumental “Turtle Twist.” Ma Rainey, the original Queen of the Blues, is joined by Louis Armstrong for “See See Rider.” Guitarist and singer Son House’s “Death Letter,” which terrifyingly stirs between the devil and salvation, is featured, as is Billie Holiday’s sad but sophisticated version of “I’m a Fool to Want You.” Many sides of the blues echo through this set. Mississippi John Hurt’s gentle picking on “Big League Blues” is nothing like the Mississippi blues; the Memphis Jug Band’s “K.C. Moan” features a kazoo, an instrument seldom found in the blues; and W. C. Handy, often called the father of the blues, sounds more like a theatrical singer than a bluesman on “Beale Street Blues.”
