Trip Foster's planet exploratory team (from the book Station XOP-13) is sent back to XOPEGZ to resume their work. Maker Explorations, because of its crimes. has lost its lease on the planet, but Foster suspects it may still be operating there clandestinely. The team travels to the crater where Maker had a camp, and since there is a geothermal energy source, they set about rebuilding the camp. Deriminc and Narminex exploration companies are sharing the expenses for the project, and while Foster is in charge, the team is make up of people from both companies. The team is then sent to Maker's former base to investigate what work had been done there. As Foster had guessed, they find that Maker is still operating the base. However, it appears that is moving its operation, because Foster sees that the buildings are being dismantled and loaded onto trucks headed north from the base. Upon following some ore trucks that are running back and forth from the south, Foster's team makes two startling discoveries. First, there is a fully functioning illegal mine in operation by Maker, and second, there was the appearance of a monstrous vehicle capable of capturing mining trucks loaded with ore. The monster captures one of Foster's vehicles, including its occupants, among whom is Vera Collard. Foster and the rest of his crew attempt a rescue. In the meantime, Maker has sent some of its security guards to destroy the monster. The source of the monster is not known by either Maker's team on XOPEGZ, nor by Foster's team.
