About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

Make: Electronics by Charles Platt was the most fun book I have ever read. That is partly because I was doing each experiment as I read it. Starting with the first where you connect a battery to your Tongue! Awesome! I think it was 10x better having the component pack to go along with it. The protechtrader component packs are the only ones that covered the whole 2nd edition book. At first I looked the other ones recommended for the book before finding out they don't cover the last chapter where half the fun was.

I'm just starting out with electronics and this follow along schematics made making these projects enjoyable and educational. As I read through the projects I realized I had some of the parts breadboard, LEDs, etc. I did a search online and found that you can get them by doing a search for "Parts for Make : Charles Platt". Chaney Electronics has all 3 experimentation packs which makes getting down building a snap. I highly recommend Charles updated version - Enjoying Snapping and Soldering your kits together!
