Lord only knows why Erasure's Loveboat -- which commenced its worldwide tour in the fall of 2000 -- took nearly three years to dock in the States. But now that their more recent covers collection, Other People's Songs, has arrived, it's hard not to step back and admire the sturdiness of the musical fleet vocalist Andy Bell and multi-instrumentalist/composer Vince Clarke have built over the years -- and how eloquently they still sail the sea of love. Loveboat is constructed from the same pop planks and ballasts the two have used for nearly two decades. Bell's simple, warm tenor conveys the full-bodied emotion of Clarke's elegant melodies, eschewing the ironic pretenses and doom-laden darkness of Erasure's two long-standing colleagues/competitors, Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode. Like synth-pop's Buddy Holly, an artist they paid homage to on the covers set, the boys seem capable of launching and endless stream of straightforward nuggets like "Freedom," an acoustic guitar and electronics paean to "real love" that should be the latest of the duo's jukebox hits, and "Here in My Heart," a closing-credits, pop-disco stomp. And if Loveboat is a little heavier on the ambient, show-tune ballads and headier electronic elements (marking Flood's return to the production chair), it's only to show that the 21st-century model is more than just an update of the same old ship.

Wonderful CD. Erasure is always new, always fun, and always creative. Andy Bell's voice is as good as ever and all the songs are memorable. Erasure has once again turned out fresh music that is both modern and true to thier style and fna base. A++++
What happened???? Erasure used to be one of my favorite electronic duos, but, after hearing their newest CD my mind is changing. This CD is not like any others in my Erasure collection. There really is only 1 song that even has the flavor of early erasure, most of the other songs are overproduced acustic guitar with some electronic sounds, and I mean some.......Needless to say I was disappointed with this new CD.
I purchased this title shortly after its release (initially released and available in the states only as an import). It was worth the $25 I forked out. Loveboat it classic Erasure... with Andy Bell and Vince Clarke once again demonstrating their musical creativity. If you enjoyed Erasure Erasure or Erasure Cowboy, you are certain to enjoy this title.
