Little Jazz: The Best of the Verve Years

Little Jazz: The Best of the Verve Years

by Roy Eldridge

The Swing Era may have unofficially ended in the late 1940s, but it's a good thing no one told trumpet phenomenon Roy Eldridge. A vital link between the early jazz innovations of Louis Armstrong and the bebop explorations of Dizzy Gillespie, "Little Jazz," as the diminutive dynamo came to be known, was also a punishing horn soloist for top-rank big bands throughout the '30s and '40s, including the Fletcher Henderson, Artie Shaw, and Gene Krupa orchestras. With the coming of a new decade -- and musical era -- Eldridge was still a powerhouse, as this scorching collection of his 1950's work proves. Spirited blasts-from-the-past (Eldridge's signature songs, "Rockin' Chair" and "Let Me Off Uptown" reunite him with Krupa and singer Anita O'Day) rousing originals ("Little Jazz," "I Remember Harlem," and "Dale's Wail,") and classic mainstream performances ("I Still Love Him So" with Benny Carter) are all the evidence needed that Eldridge was indeed aging like vintage wine.
