This Minneapolis-based sextet scored early on with their 1991 hit "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)" and have produced three moderately successful albums since. Their latest, LIFE'S AQUARIUM, rivals their previous effort, DEFINITION OF A BAND, with its mix of funk-based dance blends and sentimental ballads. Throughout, the sinewy tenor of lead vocalist Stokely Williams springs from emotive croon ("If You Love Me") to high-voltage falsetto ("Just the Man for You") with as much vibrancy as his tendrilled 'do. Yet Mint Condition's true skill is found in their multifaceted musicianship, a distinction virtually forgotten in today's producer/guru-led R&B. The band expertly manipulate technology, sending distorted sampled-horn bleats coursing through "Call Me" and adding texture with Latin-flavored acoustic guitar licks and accordion fingerings on "Spanish Eyes." Then there's the closing 14-minute "Leave Me Alone," on which Mint Condition channel New Power Generation, Joe Bataan, and Earth, Wind, and Fire in a guitar-buzzed romp that infuses pan drums, congas, jazz horns, and funky organs into a panoply of sound. The muscle-flexing flourish punctuates Mint Condition's undeniable place as contemporary R&B's premier self-contained band, especially now that Tony!, Toni!, Tone! have called it quits.

Once again Mint Condition has created a musical master piece that has come on the scene with little or no fanfare. This cd starts with a little toe tapin', to an all out stankin funk, to a little baby come back bump and grind, finishing it off with an I don't give a f**k. All the while taking you through an emotional journey of superior musicianship. As I previous Mint Condition music I expect them not to get any of the long awaited recognition of which they so richly deserve. It amazes me that they still keep pumping out great music. They are like a Luthur Vandross CD. It may not make big on the charts but you are guarnteed to get the housework done on a Saturday with it on. As always Mint Condition Delivers.
