About the Author

Carole Boston Weatherford is a poet and journalist originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Her twenty-plus books for children have earned several honors including the Carter G. Woodson Award, IRA/CBC Teachers' Choices, NCSS Notable Children's Trade Books in Social Studies, and Bank Street College of Education Best Books of the Year. Weatherford lives in High Point, North Carolina, with her husband and their two children.

Yvonne Buchanan's illustrations have been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times and the Village Voice, as well as the children's video production of Follow the Drinking Gourd: The Story of the Underground Railroad.(narration and music by Taj Mahal). She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
