Bear Family, the most venerable of German reissue labels, goes for it with this volume of historical renditions of the great Cajun anthem "Jole Blon." The tune has been transformed and transmogrified throughout pop music history from its humble origins and turned into a country song of near honky tonk proportions. Here are many -- though not all -- of the historic readings ranging from the likes of Harry Choates and Amédé Breaux to Moon Mullican and Waylon Jennings. Along the way are versions by Sheb Wooley, Red Foley, Johnny Bond, Luderin Darbone, Leo Soileau, and Wayne Raney, among others. Each performer puts his spin on the song, adding something to it without ever losing its haunting essence. The only glaring omission here is the Iry LeJeune version from the 1940s. This is a fine volume for archivists and collectors.
