Overview

For more than a decade, Jermaine Dupri has produced chart-toppers for hip-hop and R&B acts from Kris Kross and Lil' Bow Wow to Mariah Carey and TLC, while as an artist, he's also lent his offhanded rhyme flow to hits by Jay-Z and Janet Jackson. So it's no surprise that on his second solo offering, Instructions, the beat wizard capitalizes on his winning streak. Jigga (Jay-Z) and P. Diddy may get more press for their egocentric ways, but JD predates his flashy New York colleagues by a few million records sold, and throughout Instructions, Dupri rarely allows us to forget it. On the disc's aptly titled first single, "Ballin' Out of Control," he catalogs his abundant wealth: ten cars, a Lear jet, and plenty of jewels bling-blingin'. JD never strays too far from flaunting his cheddar or prattling about his pimpin' prowess, and by mid-disc, his "don't-hate-me-cuz-I'm-rich" shtick wears thin. Fortunately, his knack for pairing catchy, danceable melodies with well-selected guest appearances overshadows his shameless self-promotion. Neo-soulman Bilal drops a Curtis Mayfield-style falsetto over a simmering funk groove on "Supafly." Later, on "Yours & Mine," JD raps while his So So Def label staple Jagged Edge croon over a Timbaland-esque beat accented by sexy coos and moans. In fact, Instructions features some of Dupri's best beat science to date -- from the skeletal piano arrangement and handclaps of "Welcome to Atlanta," featuring Ludacris, to the haunting synths and skittering drums of "You Bring the Freak out of Me," featuring Kandi (formerly of his girl group Xscape) and his longtime sidekick Da Brat. Just as the title of Jay-Z's 2001 tour de force, The Blueprint, suggested the ease and success of his formulaic approach to hit making, Dupri's Instructions takes a paint-by-numbers approach that's like a 101 lesson for wannabe-large beat makers and rhyme writers everywhere. If you wanna score a hit, take your cues from the master!
